Logs are shipped from New Zealand either in Bulk on purpose-built ships or by Container

The majority of logs exported are shipped by  bulk carrier however there are benefits in shipping by container from certain regions where the cost of Harvest and Road Transport outweigh the stumpage value at Source. Our customers closer to main centres can certainly take advantage of this to attain a better yield on there investment. In most cases where the product source is less than 50km to the Company’s Packing Plant its certainly an option to be looked at, and it opens doors to smaller companies globally which wish to purchase NZ Log and finished products. When one of our consultants visits you to discuss your investment and harvest potential, he will be able to give you an evaluation what works best for you and the pros and cons of both environments either shipping in bulk or shipping in containers.

Even though often the price paid and Packing Yard Gate may be less than that paid AWF it often works out better for the producer due to the improved cost benefits of road transport

We are often asked how Containerization can be profitable against bulk wharf shipping.

So I will take the time to explain this in brief right now

it’s always welcome to find new opportunities to improve log returns for the forest owner. NZ Forest products group are always looking to maximise return back to the investor and has been working with log importing companies in China, India, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and other Asian ports to ship logs in containers. Due to New Zealand’s trade balance, 70 to 80% of shipping containers are returned empty to offshore destinations hence to Companies like Maersk and Cosco this makes perfect sense.

Containerisation works on a Hub and spoke system

Container shipping works on a Hub and Spoke system. Large container ships operate  between big, designated, service ports (the Hubs). Then, depending on the final destination of the consignment, the container may move to a satellite or feeder ships (the Spoke). Whilst a container may travel a greater distance and be handled more often with this method, the total logistics solution is optimised. When coupled with discounted rates for back loading containers this is a perfect solution specially for those some distance from a Major port offering AWG Pricing.

Most of the log export is done in 40 foot containers with 5.9m, 4.1m and 3.9m log lengths providing the best stowage efficiency. “Depending on the grade and log length, between 26 and 30 JAS m³ can be fitted into each container Fumigation, which is required for export to India and China, is usually done in the container or by tent-fumigation at the port of lading

Currently NZ Forest Products Group Limited  are exporting logs out of Auckland ,  with plans to commence supply logs to operations out of other NZ and Australian Ports.
